Brass repair & restoration

Soldering, straightening, loose joints, missing parts and controlled surface care.

Typical brass damage

Brass is strong and warm in colour, but old joints open, thin walls dent and the surface oxidises. A sound repair restores structure without erasing the age that makes the object distinctive. Brass objects may be cast, raised from sheet or assembled from several soldered parts, and some are only brass-plated. Identifying the construction and original finish makes it possible to choose a durable repair that blends with the existing object.

How Nissim can help

  • Detached feet and handles
  • Dents and distortion
  • Cracks and small holes
  • Missing ornament

Typical brass damage

Candlesticks, lamps, trays, bowls and ornaments most often fail at soldered handles, feet, bases and decorative joints. Thin bodies also develop dents and distorted rims.

Soldering and straightening brass

Brass responds to heat differently from silver and copper. Solder and temperature are selected for the thickness and nearby joints. Dents are corrected gradually with support on both sides of the metal.

Patina and finish

Brown or green patina can be removed, softened or retained in ornament. The preferred result is agreed before work begins, and only the necessary amount of surface is cleaned.

Structure and earlier repairs

The first step is to identify where the object carries load: a loose candlestick base, a weight-bearing handle or a crack beside an old joint. Adhesive, improvised screws and previous solder can conceal the real damage and prevent a sound new connection.

Wall thickness, plating and non-metal components are also checked. Parts are dismantled only when necessary and documented so their original angles, symmetry and assembly order are preserved.

Patina and finish

Replacing a missing handle, foot or ornament

A missing element can often be made in brass using a matching part or the surviving outline as a guide. The replacement is cut, formed, filed and repeatedly fitted until it sits correctly without stressing the old metal.

After attachment, the colour and texture of the new area are integrated with the object. The aim is structural stability and a coherent appearance, not to erase every sign of age.

Cleaning brass and protecting the finish

Cleaning removes grease, dust and polish residue. Polishing is abrasive and also removes a thin layer of metal. On decorated or antique brass, the desired degree of shine is agreed in advance and a stable patina can be retained.

After treatment, fingerprints should be wiped away and the piece stored dry. Steel wool, household acids and coarse compounds leave scratches and can create an uneven colour.

FAQ

Can a broken brass object be soldered?

Usually yes. The method depends on wall thickness, joint position and the load it must carry.

Should antique brass be polished?

Not always. Patina may be part of its character and value, so it can be selectively preserved.

Can a missing brass part be made?

Yes. A new part can often be modelled on a matching part or the shape of the object.

How do I get an estimate?

Send an overall photograph and close-up of the damage on WhatsApp.

How can you tell solid brass from brass plate?

Hallmarks, worn edges and the colour of the underlying metal are examined, sometimes with a discreet spot test. Plated objects require particularly gentle cleaning and polishing.

Will repair change the colour of brass?

Heat and cleaning can cause temporary colour differences. The repaired area is subsequently blended with the existing texture and patina according to the agreed finish.
