Copper repair & restoration

Dent removal, soldered cracks, missing parts and careful treatment of copper patina.

Copper objects and common damage

Copper is soft and workable, so even badly dented objects can often be rescued. It is also sensitive to force: hurried straightening or uneven heat may stretch, crack or distort the metal. Copper repair must consider the remaining thickness, the direction in which the metal has stretched and the condition of old joints - not only the visible shape. Careful planning allows dents and cracks to be treated with minimal intervention.

How Nissim can help

  • Dents and crushed walls
  • Detached handles and bases
  • Open seams and cracks
  • Bent rims and missing parts

Copper objects and common damage

Jugs, old pots, trays, bowls, vases and ornaments arrive with dents, warped rims, detached handles and cracks along old seams.

Gradual straightening and soldering

Copper is moved in small stages while its original curve is supported. Cracks and seams are cleaned, aligned and soldered with controlled heat before the joint is blended into the surrounding surface.

Green patina: preserve or remove?

Stable patina can be an attractive sign of age, while active corrosion must be stopped. The object is examined before choosing conservation, partial cleaning or a bright finish.

Thickness, interior lining and joints

Copper that has been cleaned and polished repeatedly may be very thin at rims, bases and handle attachments. Before straightening or heating, the surrounding metal and any previous solder are checked for weakness.

Cookware may have an interior tin lining, while decorative pieces can include lacquer, paint or wood. Each layer changes the order of work and the amount of heat that can be applied safely.

Making missing parts and restoring handles

A detached handle is not always a simple soldering job. The anchor may be torn, the wall weakened or the handle distorted from its original angle. The body sometimes needs reinforcement before reconnection.

A missing part can be formed from copper sheet of a suitable thickness and fitted gradually. The joint is then finished and toned without erasing original hammer marks or evidence of hand manufacture.

Aftercare and corrosion prevention

Dark brown or green patina can be stable, while rapidly developing pale-green powder can indicate active corrosion. The decision depends on texture, adhesion and continuing change - not colour alone.

After repair, keep the object dry, wipe away fingerprints and avoid prolonged contact with salts, acids and strong cleaners. A suitable protective coating may be considered for decorative objects only after the surface is clean and stable.

FAQ

Can a crushed copper object be straightened?

Usually yes, but the metal must be moved gradually to avoid stretching or cracking thin areas.

Can a copper crack be closed?

Yes, when enough sound metal remains around it. The area is cleaned, aligned and soldered.

Is green patina harmful?

Not all patina is harmful. Stable colour may be preserved, while active corrosion needs treatment.

Do you repair antique copper?

Yes, with minimal intervention and careful preservation of marks and original finish.

Can a copper object with an interior tin lining be repaired?

Often yes, but the lining must be assessed and heat planned so it is not damaged. Body repair and renewal of the lining may need to be treated as separate operations.

Can a repaired copper vessel be used for food again?

That depends on the object, joining materials and condition of the interior lining. After inspection, Nissim will explain whether the repair is suitable for active use or display only.
