Silver refinishing

For objects with deep tarnish, wear and scratches that ordinary cleaning can no longer solve.

Why silver tarnishes

There is a difference between an object that needs cleaning and one that needs refinishing. Deep tarnish in ornament, worn surfaces and years of aggressive polishing require controlled workshop treatment. Professional silver refinishing begins with an assessment of the metal, plating, wear, decoration and desired result. The purpose is not maximum shine at any cost, but the cleanest balanced surface that can be achieved while retaining detail and sound original material.

How Nissim can help

  • Tarnish embedded in ornament
  • Scratches and uneven shine
  • Thin or damaged silver plate
  • Antiques where patina should be preserved

Why silver tarnishes

Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air and forms a dark surface layer. Humidity, rubber, food and fingerprints can accelerate the process, even while an object is stored.

When home polish is not enough

Professional work is appropriate for deep tarnish, detailed engraving, silver plate, persistent stains and surfaces already worn by repeated polishing.

Controlled polishing

Every polishing step removes a minute amount of metal. The aim is therefore to remove only what is necessary, protect sharp detail and stop before plated areas or maker's marks are weakened.

Antiques and patina

Dark tone within engraving often gives an antique object depth. Refinishing can leave this shading in place and protect hallmarks, instead of making the entire surface uniformly bright.

Controlled polishing

Assessing scratches, wear and previous polishing

Not every mark should be polished away. Fine handling marks may be part of an antique object's history, while deep scratches, flat spots and exposed base metal require different decisions. The surface is examined under changing light to distinguish tarnish from actual loss or deformation.

Hallmarks, maker's marks, engraved dedications and sharp decorative edges receive special protection. On silver plate, the remaining coating is checked at rims, raised ornament and other high points before any abrasive step. If polishing would expose more base metal, a gentler result is recommended instead.

Care after professional refinishing

After treatment, handle the object with clean dry hands and remove dust with a soft cloth. Store it away from humidity, rubber bands, newspaper and sulphur-rich materials that accelerate tarnishing. A dry closed cabinet and suitable anti-tarnish wrapping can reduce how often future polishing is needed.

Routine care should be light and infrequent. When a pale yellow or grey film first appears, gentle attention is safer than waiting for a thick black layer that needs more extensive work.

What can be maintained at home and when to stop

A sound object with light tarnish can often be maintained with a soft cloth and a product made specifically for silver. Work gently, follow the product instructions and remove all residue from seams and decoration. Wash only when the construction allows it, and dry the piece completely before storage.

Avoid scouring pads, abrasive powders, toothpaste and uncontrolled chemical dips. They can leave fine scratches, soften engraving or remove silver plate from raised areas. The aluminium foil and baking soda method acts across the whole surface, including deliberate dark contrast inside ornament, so it is a poor choice for plated, decorated or antique objects.

Stop and ask for advice when the object is completely black, has loose joints, shows a different-coloured metal beneath the surface or carries important hallmarks and dedications. A photograph taken before cleaning helps distinguish a surface problem from wear that polishing cannot safely correct.

FAQ

What is the difference between cleaning and refinishing?

Cleaning removes surface tarnish. Refinishing also corrects uneven wear, deeper staining and light scratches.

Does polishing remove silver?

Any polish removes a microscopic layer, which is why professional work uses the minimum treatment required.

Can silver-plated objects be refinished?

Yes, provided the remaining plate is assessed first and worked very gently.

Should an antique be polished bright?

Not always. Patina in ornament and clear maker's marks are often worth preserving.

Why does silver tarnish while stored in a cabinet?

Tarnish is a chemical reaction with sulphur compounds in the air, not ordinary dirt. It can develop without use or handling. Humidity, rubber, newspaper, smoke and some foods can make the reaction faster.

Can brass and copper also be refinished?

Yes. Brass and copper oxidise differently and need materials suited to each metal. The same principle applies: remove only the unwanted surface change while protecting decoration, stable patina and original tool marks.
